abstract = "The main motivation of this study was to conduct an observational
study aiming to explore the potential of satellite information in
assessing the impact of rainfall on burned activities, and
consequently, on air pollution. In particular, this study tries to
understand the impact of rainfall deficits during dry season (May
to Ago) in fires activities of in Mato Grosso in September, and
how these can affect the atmospheric composition. It was used
aerosol optical thickness (AOD) from MODIS / TERRA-AQUA, monthly
mean precipitation from TRMM satellite, and biomass burning
produced by CPTEC / INPE in the period 2000-2012 . The correlation
between accumulated rainfall and biomass burning data was less
than -0.4, indicating that the deficit of rainfall in the dry
season is one of the possible causes of increasing fires in
September, but is not the only one. Socio-economic and political
preservation activities also play an important role in the burning
activity in the region. The correlation between the number of fire
focus and aerosols is 0.8 indicating a more obvious relationship
                         between fires and air quality.",
